Film Night: "Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai"

Event Date:
Thu, 01/28/2010 - 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, a film by Lisa Merton and Alan
Dater, is the January selection for Fourth Thursday Film Night at
eventgallery 910Arts, showing on January 28, at 7:30 p.m., at 910 Santa Fe
Drive.

Telling the story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder,
Wangari Maathai, who, in 2004, became the first environmentalist and first
African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, the film captures a world-view
in which nothing is perceived as impossible. It illustrates Dr. Maathai's
discovery of her life's work teaching Kenyan women about how solving the
problems of the environment can relieve their daily struggles.

Audience discussion after the film is moderated by Lucas Nandih Shamala,
Ph.D., Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies at
Metropolitan State College of Denver. The film is presented in collaboration
with the Colorado Committee for Africa and the Caribbean and with Transition
Denver, a grassroots network of communities working to face the challenges
of sustainability.

The film showing is free and open to the public; however, contributions are
always welcome.
