Artist's Statement
Annalee Schorr explores the ubiquitous and looks at the quirks in our visual world via photography, painting, installation and assemblage.
Schorr's photos, both those taken from the TV and those of Denver's homeless, aim at freezing that which flies by in our visual world so quickly that it doesn't register.
Her 2003 solo show at Spark, "Shock/Awe," was designated "Best Political solo Show of the Year" in Westword's Best of Denver issue. This exhibit explored the Iraq War as presented via television coverage.
In her recent work she has taken a break from her politically-oriented work and has "regressed" to the geometry and pattern she was known for in the 1980's. She is currently doing drawings with Sharpie pen on layers of mylar.
The use of grids and patterning is a constant in Schorr's varied works. She is interested in social aspects of our culture, and she pursues the realities, some unpleasant, that lie beneath the surfaces we present to the world. |
