    Karen Windness

    720-261-9803 woof@mudpuppystudios.com www.mudpuppystudios.com

As an artist gaining widespread recognition in the field of canine portraiture, Karen Windness’ work has been praised for capturing not just likeness, but the personality and true spirit of the dog.

Karen’s background is as an illustrator. She studied classic and contemporary illustration at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design where she was a valedictorian graduate in 2002. It was there that she studied animal anatomy – from skeleton and musculature, to drawing and painting from live models at the Denver Zoo. It is this combined proficiency in realistic animal painting and illustrative character development that gives her dog portraits such vivacity.

In 2004, Karen created Mud Puppy Studios to focus on pet portraiture. Within her first year of business she created over 75 portraits, her business growing exclusively by referral.

In 2006, Karen also became a published children’s book illustrator with the release of “Hooray for Boys and Girls” (West Woods Press). Karen is now working as a full-time artist, and has a beautiful studio at Nine10Arts on Santa Fe Drive – at the heart of the Denver art world.

Karen is constantly expanding her creative scope and is currently working on a unique series called “Who Let the Dogs Out - Of the Closet?” These paintings feature dogs in drag – from Cher as an Afghan Hound to Marilyn Monroe as a plum colored Pug.

Karen works primarily in acrylic on canvas, and with this series she has expanded both her color palette and her use of materials, incorporating collage, crystals, beads, and a touch of glitter. This series is receiving a lot of attention, and will be shown in some unique venues in the very near future.

Karen resides in Denver, with her husband, Steve, and fur-kids Bijou and Isaac.
